Getting Excited About Your Health, Day 2: Create A Compelling Future
Once you've finished gaining clarity on your health goals, the next step that you must take is forming a compelling future that you are going to want to put in the time and effort to work towards. Remember, only those who stay motivated will achieve success.
Motivation is the key factor underlying any successful person. Some people naturally have high motivation levels and some people don't. The good news is that motivation is something that can be worked at and improved when you have the right techniques in place.
So what can you do to keep motivated? That's what creating a compelling future is all about.
Let's have a look at how you'll go about doing this.
Make Your Goals Irresistible
It only stands to reason that the more excited you are about your goals and the more they mean to you, the more likely you are to put in the necessary work to achieve the success you're after. If you feel kind of so-so about your goals, when something comes your way that is prompting you to move away from what you should be doing to achieve success, you're far more likely to fall off course.
For example, let's say your goal is to simply get fit. You don't really have a firm definition of what get fit means, nor do you really know exactly why this is important to you – you've just set it and are now working towards it.
Then one day someone comes along and asks you to see a movie rather than go to the gym to do your workout.
That movie provides instant gratification – you're comfortable, you're entertained, and you're relaxed. Seems like a win-win to you. Since your desire to go the gym doesn't provide you with much in the way of instant gratification, off you go to the movie, blowing off your gym workout.
So what your job is will be to make that goal irresistible. Do this by finding somewhere quiet to sit and then closing your eyes and picturing that dream becoming a reality. Think about yourself as already have achieved it and not how you are going about your life. Note all the changes that are in place from reaching that goal and it is impacting your daily life.
Hold this thought there for five or ten minutes so you can really 'be' in that dream and then move on to your next goal until all are completed.
This will bring a very high desire to achieve those goals and make you far more compelled to stick with it through those hard times.
Once that's finished, then it's time to create a compelling future.
Set The Stage
The first thing that you need to do is set the state. Begin by thinking about where you'll be tomorrow. Imagine the sights, sounds, and people around you. Place yourself in that picture, living in the future in this vision that you've created.
Place Yourself In Your Chosen Role
Next, place yourself in this future that you've just created, moving closer to your chosen goal. See yourself achieving success, doing all the things that will be necessary to accomplish that goal.
Feel the sights and sounds around you, how others are reacting as you realize true success for what it is that you are after.
Make Sure Your Goal Is Formed Properly
As you're moving through this future scene in your mind, which is so close you can almost 'taste it', make sure that your goals that you've set satisfy the following different conditions.
- What you're trying to accomplish is something positive. Remember, we aren't focusing on what you don't want to do, but rather what you do want to do.
- This goal is something that you actually do want to be doing. It's not something that you should be doing because others have told you so or because you feel outside pressure to do so.
- You are the one who is accomplishing this goal. It's not someone else doing something, but rather something that is completely dependent on your actions and behaviors.
- This goal is something that you can actually accomplish. It's not an unattainable goal that is almost impossible to come true. Reality is important.
- The goal that you're working towards is highly specific so that you can immediately measure or realize when you have achieved it. General goals will not give you nearly the same satisfaction of accomplishment as specific goals will.
- The goal is ecological, which means that you know ahead of time that accomplishing this goal will be positive for anyone who is involved within this goal's environment
If your goal has attained all of these conditions, then it's time to move on.
Make Your Image As Compelling As Possible
Now you want to take that vision of yourself achieving your goal and make it as exciting and dramatic as possible. Imagine vivid colors in that future scene as you are achieving success. Put yourself in your own shoes and feel the excitement building in your body and mind as you finally get what you desire.
Make sure that this goal feels of utmost importance to you and is something that energizes and awakens your mind and body.
Take Note Of The Path To Get There
Finally, you want to notice the pathway that lends where you are now to this vision that you've created. This is a pathway of time. That's all that separates you from achieving the success you're after. There is a clear link between where you are now and where you want to be. Given time, anything is possible and you can have this vision that you've created for yourself.
If you take the time and move yourself through each of these steps, when you finish this exercise, you will now have a very clear picture in mind of what you want for the future. You will be compelled to work towards it, giving it everything you've got. You will be on your way to success.
