What to do: Eat 1 healthy food for each color of the rainbow.

    Rainbow Diet Challenge

This week's challenge is to eat 1 healthy food for each color of the rainbow: one color a day for 6 days.

Getting enough variety into your diet is important for a number of reasons. First, it's going to help to prevent boredom. Food is something that is meant to be enjoyed and the more variety you can get, the easier it is to stay on course.

In addition, eating a high amount of variety is important to meet your nutritional needs. While counting calories, you also must be thinking about all the micronutrients that your body needs as well.

Eating foods from all colors is one of the best ways to combat this.

Let's have a look at some example foods that would represent each color.

The first color to tackle is orange. Brightly colored orange foods is a good sign that they're high in vitamin C or vitamin A and will serve as strong antioxidants for the body.

Two top picks in this color category include oranges and carrots. Oranges are great for boosting your immune system. Carrots will help ensure a healthy metabolism and help to reduce your risk of night blindness.

Yellow is another color you'll want to get in. The most common choice here would be the banana, which is loaded in potassium and a great pick for those performing intense physical exercise. Getting in enough potassium is important for ensuring that you are going to be sustaining strong muscular contractions.

Another option under the yellow category would be yellow peppers, which are also high in vitamin C content and liven up any dish in a hurry.

Moving along, don't overlook red. Red is a powerful color and tomatoes are the perfect choice here. Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, which will promote a healthy prostate gland, so are especially important for males to consume.

Red can also be found in red peppers, also rich in vitamin C. You'll also receive a dose of capsaicin, which is a compound that can enhance your metabolic rate, causing you to burn more calories on a daily basis.

Green rich foods are cancer-fighting foods and come primarily from vegetables. Top picks here include spinach, broccoli, green cabbage, and Brussels sprouts. Green vegetables are very low in calories, and are also loaded in fiber content.

This makes them ideal for keeping your blood sugar levels stable while keeping hunger lower as well.

Serve these up with as many meals as you can - you literally cannot get too many fresh vegetables in your diet.

Purple is yet another food choice that you'll want to consider. Purple is best found in cabbage, which is one of the best cancer-fighting foods around. Serve cabbage up in a salad, stir-fry, or prepare cabbage rolls from it.

Purple can also come from purple grapes, which contain the same compounds found in wine that can boost heart health and improve cholesterol levels.

Grapes provide the perfect sweet treat to satisfy any craving in a hurry.

Finally, blue is the last color that you want to be sure you're taking in with your diet. Blue you can get from blueberries, which are a great brain boosting food to include in your diet.

This food is also very rich in antioxidants and will help to fend off free radical damage. At just 50 calories per half cup, you can easily add it to your day without a problem.

So there you have a few examples from each color of the rainbow. Make it your mission this week to eat at least one food representing each color every single day.
