Ingredients Needed

  6. Carrots - Raw (0.5 cup of chopped)
  7. Garlic, Minced (2.0 tsp)
  8. Smithfield Ham (1.0 lb)
  9. Salt (1.0 tsp)
  10. Ground Black Pepper (0.25 tsp)
  11. Red Pepper Flakes, Crushed (0.25 tsp)
  12. Water (8.0 cup (8 fl oz))
  13. Bay Leaf (1.0 piece)
  14. Fresh Thyme (2.0 tsp)
  15. Parmesan Truffled Potato Chips (1.0 cup)

Instructions

Split pea soup is often a thick, hearty soup that can be a rich source of protein and fiber. This Nutrisystem Ham and Split Pea Soup Recipe is a lot healthier than usual since it contains more vegetables, ham hock and ham. It’s also easy to follow and ingredients are not difficult to find since you can buy them at your local supermarket.

  • In a large pot or bowl, put the peas and swathe with water by 2 inches and steep 8 hours or overnight. Drain the peas and set aside. Most split pea soup recipes call for soaking the peas overnight and this is done so as to help soften the peas.
  • In scoring the ham hock, put it in pot covered with water and bring to a boil. Let it simmer for 1 hour under low heat then drain and set aside. When scoring a ham hock, you still can use knife and cut the parts of the ham hock before putting in the pot.
  • Melt the butter in a large bowl over medium-high heat then add in the onions and cook for 2 minutes. Then mix in the celery and carrots and cook until just soft for 3 minutes. Put in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds. In cooking, garlic are cooked with lesser amount of time since they cook easily and gets brown and bitter to the taste once overcooked.
  • Put in the ham hock and ham and fry, stirring, until beginning to brown. Add the drained peas, salt, pepper, and pepper flakes, and cook, stirring for 2 minutes. Add 8 cups of water, the bay leaf and thyme, and cook until the peas are tender for about 1 hour.
  • Remove the bay leaf and throw away. Adjust the seasoning according to your liking and serve instantly with Parmesan Truffled Chips on top.
