  13. Thyme (Dried) (0.5 tsp of ground)
  14. Cloves (Ground) (1.0 pinch)
  15. Cayenne Pepper (1.0 pinch)
  16. Black Pepper (Ground) (2.0 tsp)
  17. Hamburger Buns (4.0 bun)

A Sloppy Joe, in its traditional state would never be considered a diet food that might help a person in his or her weight loss goals, but the components can be made less caloric and fatty with a few simple changes in the recipe.   • In a large sauté pan, heat olive oil on medium high heat. Add the carrots and cook for 5 minutes then add the chopped onion and celery. Stir occasionally until onions are translucent for about 5 more minutes. Then mix in the minced garlic and cook for 30 more seconds. Remove from heat. Separate the vegetables from the pan to a medium sized bowl and set aside.
  • Using the same pan liberally put salt at the bottom of the pan. Lay the ground beef into the pan. It is more advisable to do this in two batches so as the beef will cook evenly instead of crowding the pan with all of it. Cook the ground beef, without stirring, until it is well browned on one side. Then flip the pieces over and brown the second side. Use a slotted spoon to remove the ground beef from the pan, salt the pan again and repeat with the rest of the ground beef.
  • Place the cooked ground beef and vegetables back to the pan and add the ketchup, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar and brown sugar. Stir to mix well. Add ground cloves, thyme, and cayenne pepper. Lower the heat to medium low and let simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Serve with toasted hamburger buns. This can accommodate 7-8 people.
