Ingredients Needed

  1. Bacon (8.0 thin slice (yield after cooking))
  2. Onions - Raw (1.0 medium)
  3. Green Peppers - Raw (1.0 medium)
  4. Baked Beans with Pork (Canned) (84.0 oz)
  5. Barbecue Sauce (0.75 cup)
  6. Brown Sugar (0.5 cup unpacked)
  7. Apple Cider (0.25 cup)
  8. Mustard (2.0 tsp)

Instructions

This is a great side dish to accompany any meals. The beans are soft and are bursting with bacon and barbecue flavor. These goes especially well with grilled meat or steaks. Go ahead and make one now.

  • Prepare and measure all the ingredients as listed in the recipe above.
  • Mince the onions. You may use regular white or red onions for this recipe. If you want a more intense flavor, you can substitute the onions with shallots.
  • Mince the green pepper as well. Get to the same size as the onions.
  • Measure the barbecue sauce, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, dry mustard, and set them aside. Don’t start cooking unless you have all the ingredients ready.
  • For this recipe, we will be using the oven to bake our beans. Have your oven ready ahead of time by preheating it to 325 degrees F or 165 degrees C.
  • Preheating your oven will give it enough time to achieve the desired temperature. This will result to faster and even cooking of our beans.
  • Prepare as well a baking pan that is large enough to hold our beans.
  • First step into making our baked beans is to fry our bacon. Take out a sauté pan put a couple of tablespoons of water in it.
  • Lay out your bacon strips in the pan and put this over medium heat. Allow the water to evaporate and let the bacon release its fat and reduce until brown and crispy.
  • Once browned and crispy already, remove the bacon and set this aside. Leave the drippings in the pan.
  • Sauté the onions and pepper in the same pan with the bacon drippings over low heat. Allow the onions to sweat. They should become soft and turn translucent. Stir continuously to prevent burning. This will take about 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Add the beans to the pan. Stir for a minute.
  • Add the rest of the ingredients – canned pork and beans, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, and mustard. Stir to mix the ingredients and their flavors.
  • Turn the heat to high and bring the mixture to a simmer. Once simmering, transfer the mixture to the prepared baking pan.
  • Spread the beans evenly in the pan and top it with bacon. Transfer the pan in the oven and bake the beans for about 2 hours. The mixture should bubble and the sauce should become similar to syrup in consistency.
  • Once sauce has thickened enough, remove the beans from the oven and transfer them to a serving dish. This recipe is good for about 18 servings.
