Every single year in gym class I lived in fear that THIS WEEK was "run a mile on the track in front of all the jocks and almost pass out from breathing so hard" week. Hated feeling like a failure, hated being one of the last people to cross the finish line..
Now I'm down almost 115 pounds, weigh less than I did in high school, and when I go for walks I actually think to myself, "I wonder how it would feel now, being lighter and actually trying to jog". So I've done it a few times...and I don't hate it! Still utterly dislike, but don't hate. lol.
I have a gym membership but almost never use it. My bff and gym buddy moved across the country, and it's always been hard for me to find motivation to work out. I enjoy it once I'm there, but...I don't know. It's just something I equate to a bad time, and that feeling is hard to break..
But I live out in an extremely quiet residential neighborhood, lots of sidewalk space, and I've heard of people who ROCK the couch to 5k program. It's only three times a week, 20-25 minutes...and I get to be outside, listen to music. Not a bad deal. So today, I'm starting the program. I have a podcast on my ipod that tells you when to slow down and speed up, etc. so I won't have to carry a piece of paper around telling me when to do so..
I've been needing a change, something to push myself and get new motivation. This might do the trick!.
I'm kind of scared, but so anxious to see how I do! Has anyone else done this?.
I'm a fellow running-hater. I've tried to love running, and tried to run even though I don't love it..
I finally found something I CAN do and don't completely hate...interval training. I've been doing a lot of research on exercise physiology, and decided to give intervals a try. They suck while you're doing them but it's only 20-25 minutes 3x/week, and then it's done. I just walk/sprint/walk/sprint/etc. Not too bad..
I applaud you for doing the 5k program. I hope it goes great for you!.
But decided to do the C25K program, and WOW does it work! Now I run because (wait for it...)... I WANT to! Went on a 2 mile run last night, incredibly de-stressing and invigorating..
I started the C25K program when I was just over 200 lbs. Ran my first 5K race in August (at the end of my 8th week on the C25K program)..
Can't say enough good things about it! Some tips:.
Be sure to stretch before and after your runs..
I had trouble with electrolytes (others don't seem to, but I did), so I used Nuun tabs, they are virtually carb-free fizz tabs you put in water. These really helped, as do almonds..
Hi there! I'm on week 2 or C25K and can really do it! I actually had an interval last night that was easy! That's only after 3 run/walks. So, I heartily recommend the program. I use a podcast because I have a Nano, not an iPhone. But it still works the same. Good luck!.
You will be amazed. If you'd like to read about my success with the program (and those of everyone else who started it july) check out the "Starting C25K in July" thread. It is life changing..
That's great! I've been thinking about doing it too. I'm not crazy about running either. It could be the two ankle reconstruction surgeries I've had. But since I am down 46 pounds I do find that I have a spring in my step when I go for walks..
BanTam even has me considering the Color Run in Austin in Feb..
You can actually do this with any cardio equipment. I used to do this a lot with the elliptical machine and I switch off on some other equipment as well so that my body wouldn't adapt to the one workout. HIIT (High intensity interval training) has been shown to have some incredible effects on the body in a fairly short period of time. That's how I firmed up my body! Been doing those workouts since week 3 in some shape or form and then added running..
