I sure wish I could find turnips in my area. No luck so far. I will have to keep looking since I was very pleasantly surprised by the mashed cauliflower and I am eager to try turnips. I have never eaten a turnip in my life...probably wouldn't recognize one if I saw one either... lol.
They are round about the size of a med apple and white with a purpleish top. I cut them up like french fries last week and they were yummy. Good Luck. Try a farmers market..
LOL, at my age I had never even tasted a turnip, much less bought any. BUT, I tried boiling them the other night and they weren't half bad ! Do you peel them like a potato or not ? IDK. The only thing, they were kinda mushy. How would you bake them ?
Yummmy, there is a local farmer who sells them on the side of the road on my way home from work. Im gonna have to pay attention from now on when he has them out! When you cut them like fries did you bake them? Do they kinda sorta taste like a french fry? I'd be in heaven at this point if they are even a lil close to a fry!.
Any tips on preparing turnips? I have tried them as "baked chips", "baked fries" and "fried hash browns" and it is always messier and more time consuming than it would have been using potatoes. What kitchen tools do you use?.
Curious did you prepare them the way I posted the recipe? I've had quite a few people ask me why the Splenda (in the boiling water, not the finished product). Turnips can have a bite to them and in the south we usually put a little sugar in the water you boil them in to counter act that bitterness that most folks don't like. I don't use the Splenda while mashing..
I have done the mashed turnips. No need to sweeten the water. I disagree with making sugary things. Eating sugary things is why I am here..
