Realistic healthy body weight goal?

Ok first a little background. I am 6’3” and have been between 280 and 320 most of my adult life. I played college football until a major shoulder injury but stayed active weight lifting until I was about 30 when I started with major hypertension issues. Even at 300# I was athletic, never limited, did what I want when I wanted. At 38 years old I reached 348 pounds, all the abuse on my body has came knocking at my door & high blood pressure and sleep apnea keep me wore down. I went Elk hunting this past October and for the first time in my life realized that I was a fat & out of shape heart attack waiting to happen.

I then noticed a good friend of mine who was dropping ridicules amount of weight, that’s when he turned me on to medifast. I started the program about 2 weeks ago and finding it very easy to follow..

I have been over 220# since the 8th grade. I have been at 260# without an ounce of fat. I have a large frame and could not imagine myself at 175# or what they are calling my healthy body weight. My 15 year old son is 6’ 180# and he is a bean poll. My question is this; what is a realistic healthy goal I should be shooting for? Should I shoot for 200-225# and let my BMI or % body fat dictate what is a healthy goal?.

As a fellow hunter, I understand the reckoning you get on a hunt. I tend to lose extra weight in the fall just for that reason. I used to hike 2 to 3 miles one way to hunt elk in CO. It is tough going, especially at 10 to 12 thousand feet..

As far as healthy weight, that can be figured out as you go. I know my 165 is good for me as I have been there before. I am around 5'9" with a large frame (can not touch my fingers around my wrist). You have to remember that when you played ball, you had a great deal of muscle you may not need now. You should lose weight when you stop playing. Look up Mark Schlereth.

He is 6'3" and was up around 285 when he played (granted he struggled to stay up there). He now weighs 205 and is actually lighter than when he was in high school..

A good Doc should be able to help if you are really confused..

Thanks, 200-220# is kind of been shooting for. Never tried the wrist wrap thing but you have a good point, mine dont touch either by like 1 1/2" ..

Eshebert, first off, Welcome aboard. I truly empathize with your situation. I am not as big as you but at 6 foot, I have been as heavy as the high 200's. That I know for sure, 280lb.s but I'm certain I reached well beyond that at several points. I have dabbled at certain points with weight training/ body building. With my final attempt at "glory" coming after my divorce in 2006.

i always had the "guns", measuring in the eight-teen inch range and benching over 300lbs..

My 15 year old son, at 6' 1'' weighs 195 pounds and has a slim/ medium build with the lack of "adult male" muscle. That is to say, for a teenager he's fairly wide but he lacks the muscle that comes with maturity( and lets face it- hard work)..

Well, my doctor wants me at my high school graduating weight of- 163 pounds! 8 (.

I'm sorry, there is NO way, I can reach that weight unless you want to recreate a scene from a concentration camp! I have chosen 200lbs. as my final goal weight! I am currently 218 lb.s and people say I look perfect. I know I can still lose the a layer that sits above my waist, so I will continue. My own son(lives with his MOM) cant believe I'm within his.

Weight range, I haven't seen him since I began this journey and look forward to his reaction..

Bottomline, I'd beware of the BMI charts and optimal weight charts as we are all built differently. According to the charts, I need to get down to 175lbs. just to touch the correct weeight range for my height. Heck, I just walked into my project managers office and he said, "whats up bones"! LOL! I'd use my best judgement on this, of course also factor in your blood pressure and what not. Then, with all things considered,.

    You.

Can make the best decision. I've never met you, but at 6' 3" with a large frame, I can't really see you below 220lbs. Thats just a guesstimate. I'm basing that on my frame and adding 3inches of height..

BTW, wrist circumference may not be the best judge of frame size. I have tiny wrists and ankles but am wide as a house..

I am glad you brought this up....

What a healthy BMI is for my height isnt going to happen with my body frame. I am 6'2 and weighed 397 before medifast. I am at 333 right now and my goal is 275. In 8th grade when we started football workouts I remember being 347lbs. I have about a 1 1/4" gap b/t my thumb and index finger. A friend of mine has the same body structure as me and same height and he is at 280 wearings a size 40 jeans and XL and 2xl shirts..

This morning I had to throw on some NON Work clothes for the first time in a couple weeks. I crapped myself. I was able to easily put on my old 42 waste wranglers and had to go way back in my closet to find an old belt. I went in the bathroom and checked my weight 323? I have spent most of the last 4 years between 340 and 325, but I have not been able to get under my 44’s, and I damn sure never ran out of loops on my belt. Medifast must really focus on burning your fat areas and not affect muscle mass as fast as the old starvation and exercise method I have used to drop weight in the past. Pretty stoked!.

CajunFX4, Its cool to see another coonass on here. I am aslo from South LA, what I would not do for a duck and sausage gumbo right now, medifast is rough when a cold front moves in..

Glad you asked this question, because I have been struggling with this as well. When I started the program, I went to the chart and based on my height and frame size picked the middle of the range (or 155)..

However, I have since had several Body Comps done, and am now going to set my goal based on my Body Fat %. Based on this (today) I should end up about 200 to 205..

Guess I will see what I am like when I get to that weight..

That's why my goal weight is set at 200 for now. My ideal weight based on charts is something like 159-170 but I don't think I was meant to be that small. I'm getting to 200 and I'll evaluate from there but I feel like that'd be a good goal for me..

Yeah - the charts Medifast provides are my one major beef with the program. Talk about unrealistic. I'm 6'2", large framed, and am shooting for between 200 and 220. Not sure where I'll wind up, but I was 190 my senior year in high school (and in good shape - played basketball). Since then, I have grown 2" in height and my chest grew 4" during the first two years in college, and they weren't fat. I've also got muscle now I didn't have then.

I'm not stressing it and I'm certainly not going to be 175ish, like the BMI charts say I "should" be..
