Tonight, all the staff from the main Board of Education office and my branch are having a barbecue down by the river. There's absolutely no way to avoid the super fatty cuts of meat and beer, so I'm just going to give in and enjoy. You can't eat healthy at Japanese work events! It's against the rules!

Managed to not eat bread for a week because of the Skip Your Favorite Junk Food challenge. It hasn't been so bad, and I kind of realized that bread is sort of an emotional crutch for me. If I'm feeling upset or bad, I devour any kind of bread I can get my hands on. Now I just have to learn how to not emotionally eat anything else!

If I'm in the green for everything, but the protein bar has shot through the roof, is that a bad thing? I'd rather eat lots of protein instead of carbs and fats.

It turns out I've reached my goal weight of 60 kg (well, 60.3 kg!), but I don't feel like I'm the right size yet. I think for now, I'll just work on maintaining the weight, and then if I need to, I can lose more later.

Had my cheat meal this morning and it didn't taste as good as I thought it would, and it made me feel yucky. I think I will avoid cheat meals as rewards. As they say, "Nothing tastes sweeter than sexy"

@doctorgabi Had the last aojiru blueberry pancake for breakfast today (only 10 carbs!), and in logging it, recieved this message: "Think pancakes are a thing of the past? Grab your favorite recipe and replace the flour with almond meal. Slather them in butter and drizzle on some pure maple syrup." Maybe I'm wrong...but, slathering butter on anything, surely, that can't be healthy.

I agree - I feel like this site can be a bit black and white - sugar = bad, fat = good. I can't believe that can be right. Like can I have fried chicken and mayo but not an orange?

I know!! Sometimes you log some karaage and you get +12 for having a healthy source of protein (despite the oil still dripping from your fingers). Perhaps they are using data from the USDA?

I have switched to the Ezekiel bread as a healthier alternative and I LOVE the stuff! But I still crave a good yeast roll, or biscuit, or home made bread.. mmmmmmm!! ARGH!!!!

I try to remember the old adage: "the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results"...

    • img

      xprawn2736 days ago

I had the same experience several times and realised that I put up with feeling crap for a long time, I don't want that any more. I like feeling healthy and energetic, so I guess it means I can't bake cookies every day any more - I'll just have to get over it. Breaking old habits is hard, don't punish yourself - you've learnt from it, that's what's important. :)

    • img

      Butch21122736 days ago

It took a little while for me to change also, it was real easy to slip back to old habits. But after I gained a couple of pounds back I really pissed me off to put forth effort ( even small effort ) with no reward. Now it kind of works the other way if I want something bad I think what it will cost me. The wife and I still have our night out but even then the choices we make are a lot smarter, with very little cheating anymore. Good luck

Yoga in the house? You can probably find a lesson on youtube - I do a yoga program and while looking at reasons to justify buying a new ipad I saw there was a yoga app you could download. Having said that, I'm sure there must be apps for all sorts of exercises at home in that case, eh... I should probably buy one asap!

I walk, run and bike in the rain all the time. I find it refreshing and a nice challenge. Honestly, I think you should throw on some clothes that you don't mind getting wet and just enjoy it. If it's cold, throw a fleece or some wool on.

    • img

      rcook13852749 days ago

I agree with all the above :) If you have any work out dvd's do those, or even if you don't, there are a TON of work outs on youtube, or even other places online. :) And walking in the rain might actually do some good for your feel good feelings :) Think of it as the rain washing off all your worries, and cleansing you :)

    • img

I walk in the rain, snow, sun. Doesn't matter. If my husband is working and I can't bring the kids with me because of the weather, I will dance around while cleaning. Gets the work out in and the house clean :)

@doctorgabi I made a variant on the standard oatmeal. I put the oats in with a little oat bran and wheat bran, plus sugar substitute and maple flavoring, and let it sit overnight. I ate it cold this morning and it was awesome! It was super easy and good since it is a little hot this morning.

Yea, I think I'll sign up for it starting tomorrow. BTW - no added sugar includes things like any place we'd eat out at. Indian place would have loads of curry, salad dressings, etc. I'm worried I can't do it!

It has an all-you-can-eat salad bar so I got that with Tandoori Chicken Tikka. It was sooooooo good!

    • img

      tanuki2755 days ago

Even without the sugar substitutes, the overnight oatmeal would be good!

    • img

      doctorgabi2755 days ago

I've already gradually weened myself off the sweet oatmeal. It was cinnamon, honey or maple syrup, nuts (or sunflower seeds), sesame seeds and raisins (or apricots, figs, dates). Now I have all that except the fruit and sugar component and I'm so used to it it's delicious. Made with 2/3 water 1/3 soy milk. :-D おいしいね!

Hello my friend! Congrats! I know how you love your bread products! Do you like oatmeal? I've started having it for breakfast every day with raisins, cinnamon, nuts, even sunflower seeds and sesame seeds. Plus half water half soy milk. It hardly registers on any of the measures so you can eat loads and get nicely full to stave off the cravings until lunch. Plus the kind we have here, you can make it in 3 mins in the microwave, so it's quick too. :-D
